Communications Coordinator

The City of Eden Prairie is looking for a Communications Coordinator. The Communications Division supports all City departments/divisions and is responsible for leading the City's communication and marketing efforts by ensuring the timely distribution of accurate, relevant information to citizens, businesses and employees in a manner that reflects the City's high professional standards. The Communications Coordinator supports all City departments and works in a team environment to facilitate two-way, symmetrical communication between City staff and members of the Eden Prairie community, accurately providing information and feedback related to City programs and services. This includes the effective coordination of all marketing and communication projects, public relations efforts and digital media initiatives. The Communications Coordinator is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:

1) Creates and implements strategic communication plans for citywide initiatives and individual department programs, to promote positive perceptions, increase awareness and encourage engagement within the community.

2) Writes for publication both internally and externally, including City newsletter, news releases, website, email and intranet; monitors and assists with City's social media efforts.

3) Identifies and implements opportunities to develop and expand City's online tools, including edenprairie.org, intranet, streaming video and email subscription service capabilities.

4) Directs and supervises video production of external programming, including news briefs and PSAs for use on EPTV 16 and edenprairie.org, as well as internal video projects.

5) Serves as media contact for Citywide initiatives, and backup Police and Fire PIO; provides communications-related counsel and leadership to department directors and City staff, proactively identifying internal and external communication opportunities.

6) Leads the marketing and communications efforts of the Parks and Recreation Department, including the development of strategic marketing and communications plans for the Community Center and Art Center, and serves as media contact for related inquiries.

7) Manages City's print production and oversees graphic designer; assigns work and provides direction to Assistant Communications Coordinator. While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Position Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or related field.

Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years of marketing/communications/PR experience including the following:
  • Writing for internal and external audiences for full range of media, including print, web and social media; experience using AP style.
  • Leading complex projects from conception to completion.
  • Collaborating with a team of communications professionals with a common goal. 
  • PR and media relations. 
  • Creating and producing marketing collateral.
  • Still photography and videography experience desirable. 
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
Other Requirements:
  • Must frequently communicate or keep confidential sensitive subject matter and periodically be available at disturbing fire and police scenes. 
  • There is a need to make presentations, which involves public speaking in front of City leaders, to the public, and the media. 
  • Between 60% and 80% of the time there is pressure associated with a project or activity deadline. 
  • Frequent critical thinking and decision-making. 
  • Report preparation and writing at times requires extended use of a keyboard. 
  • Work interruptions are frequent and being available on call 24/7 is required. 
Working Conditions:
  • Most work is done in an office environment during business hours M–F, with occasional evening and weekend assignments, and 24-hour on-call availability for PIO function.

Salary: Starts at $58,074
Benefits: Qualifies for full-time benefits date of hire
Location: City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie, Minn.
Hours: Standard business hours (8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.), but will vary with after-hours City meetings and events.
